Welcome To Our Yard

Spring has sprung at my house! We moved into our home during the winter when everything was dead and dreary-looking outside, so we had no idea what our yard would look like in the spring. We were told that several things would bloom, but we had no idea what we had to look forward to. Especially since I am absolutely clueless about all things flora-related. I have been pleasantly surprised over these past couple of weeks to watch my yard come to life with blooms of all kinds and colors. One of my favorites is the tree in our front yard (see below). We think it's some kind of cherry tree. (Leave me a comment if you know for sure what type! I'd love to know.) It is the view from our front master bedroom window and the first thing I see when I open the curtains every morning. What a wonderful way to wake up! I wanted to share these photos with you. Keep in mind, I cannot take credit for any of this as I had nothing to do with planting any of these things. But flowers make me happy, so I hope the photos will do the same for you.

The tree in our front yard.

I even picked a little sprig of it to bring inside:
You might recognize my mirrored shot glass bud vase I am putting to good use!

Pool house in back yard.
The photo above was taken before the flowers bloomed. We have a pool house, but no pool! The pool was filled in before we moved in. Now, I say pool house, but what I really mean is pool room. It's not as luxurious as it sounds, but it certainly is nice to have some extra space. We'll be having our son's birthday party out here, and eventually it will be my craft/project room! I am so excited about that. It is a total blank slate inside so I can't wait to get to work on it. When we moved in, my husband claimed this space as his "man cave," and I was fine with that. But we moved in several months ago and he's yet to set foot in there more than once or twice, so my philosophy is you snooze you lose! Ok, in all honesty, he doesn't mind if I turn it into my project room because then he can have his spot in the garage back. And we have compromised - there is a little bar area in here that will be his "man space" to brew beer or whatever he wants to do with it. The other half of the room is mine
But, back to the rest of the yard ...

Here are the flowers that have now bloomed in front of the pool house:

This is the area that runs along one side of our fence.
(On the other side of the fence is woods where we often see deer.)

Hydrangeas blooming (see below). I was particularly excited about this. Hydrangeas are one of my favorite types of flower, and I had actually planned on planting some. Little did I know, we already had some just waiting to bloom! (Yeah, I'm that clueless.)

We are going to be doing some projects outdoors soon, so I will be sharing that with you also. We'll be doing a little porch makeover, and (yikes) attempting to plant our very first garden! Should be interesting since neither my husband or I know what we are doing exactly. But we started a little compost heap and we hope to get something growing out there. Advice is welcome! I know nothing about gardening. No really, seriously - nothing! But I'm looking forward to learning as we go along.

Feel free to leave a comment and let me know you stopped by. I LOVE comments and I read them all!

  1. Great yard and tons of potential! I have a very similar 'cherry blossom' tree that hangs over our driveway and looks amazing for about 3 weeks- then turns just green leaves. I will take pics when it blooms. We are in Maine, so probably 3 weeks or so behind you I would assume. Cant wait to see your projects :)

    1. Thank you! We are enjoying it. We moved here from a townhome which had practically no yard at all, so with 2 boys and 2 dogs it's been nice to have some outdoor space.
